On this 4th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas (UNDROP), we are launching – with FIAN International, La Via Campesina and CETIM – a new website dedicated to this Declaration.
Conceived as a one-stop platform available in English, Spanish and French, Defending Peasants’ Rights aims at providing all those who can impact the rights of peasants – peasants and rural organizations, local and national governments, human rights bodies, civil society organizations, international organizations, lawyers, attorneys and magistrates – with all the latest information and resources on UNDROP and its implementation.
‘This new tool will offer regular updates about case law, as well as legislative and policy developments that upheld the rights of peasants. It will also be a place to organize training courses and share strategies to fight for the rights enshrined in UNDROP, to link the Declaration to other international instruments and standards, and to ensure the articulation between the different organizations and movements working towards its implementation’ explains Dr Christophe Golay, Senior Research Fellow at the Geneva Academy and a member of the website’s editorial board.
‘We are very grateful to the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, Action de Carême and HEKS/EPER for their support in making this happen. By joining forces and making all our resources available in one place, we are convinced that this website will really help us to better promote and implement UNDROP on the ground’ says Dr Golay.
This website forms part of our research on the right of peasants and the implementation of UNDROP. All our publications, training materials and training courses will also be available on this new platform.
After having provided academic support to the negotiation of the UN Declaration for ten years, this research project focuses on the implementation of the UN Declaration on the rights of peasants and other people working in rural areas.
This research aims at mainstreaming the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment and the protection it affords in the work of the UN Human Rights Council, its Special Procedures and Universal Periodic Review, as well as in the work of the UN General Assembly and UN treaty bodies.
