The Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, established in 2007 as a joint centre of the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva and the Geneva Graduate Institute, has acquired a global reputation for excellent teaching and research, attracting exceptional students to its master’s programmes.
Located in the heart of Geneva, an international city and humanitarian hub, we are able to interact closely with international organisations, NGOs, experts, governments and the private sector. We also actively participate in global discussions on international humanitarian law, human rights, international criminal law and transitional justice.
This innovative and intellectually challenging part-time programme, offered entirely online, is designed for professionals with demanding jobs and responsibilities. The 60 ECTS Executive Master – Master of Advanced Studies in International Law in Armed Conflict provides the legal tools needed to address complex contemporary conflicts, humanitarian emergencies, human rights negotiations, and criminal proceedings, meeting the growing demand for specialists.
Through this programme, students will gain access to world-renowned professors and leading experts in their fields. They will also benefit from direct connections with key actors in the field and have the opportunity to engage with fellow participants from an array of different legal backgrounds and perspectives.
Courses take place online over nine months at lunchtime (12:00 to 14:00 CET). When participants cannot follow a course for professional reasons (e.g. missions, travel, conferences), they can watch the recording afterwards. An easy online platform allows direct interaction with professors, other participants and the teaching assistants, access all the course materials and readings, submission of exams, and access to grades. Following completion of exams, participants have six months to write a research paper under the guidance of a faculty member. The programme officially ends with the graduation ceremony held in person in Geneva.
By providing the necessary tools to apply the international legal framework in complex contemporary conflicts, our Executive Master – MAS in International Law in Armed Conflict – equips high-level professionals with the relevant skills and knowledge to take on additional responsibilities or advance their careers.

The main distinction between the LLM in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights and the Master in Transitional Justice, Human Rights and the Rule of Law is that the LLM focuses on armed conflicts, while the Master in Transitional Justice, Human Rights and the Rule of Law is dedicated to post-conflict human rights violations. Students enrolled in either of the programmes have common optional courses and can participate in the Jean-Pictet competition. These are one-year full-time programmes which take place in Geneva, Switzerland.

An Executive Master/Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) (60 ECTS credits), awarded by the University of Geneva and the Geneva Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.
The Executive Master – MAS in International Law in Armed Conflict is organised around a small and intimate cohort, with only 40 participants selected each year to take part in the programme. This creates an exceptional learning environment, bringing together some of the most experienced and academically qualified students from all over the world, fostering rich discussions and meaningful exchanges between participants and faculty members.
Professionals who are not enrolled in the Executive Master can take short courses to deepen their expertise in a specific area and receive a certificate upon completion.
This enables participants to draw on the comprehensive expertise of the Faculty of Law, meet key experts and practitioners, and interact with other professionals attending the Executive Master.
Candidates who apply must have work experience in a relevant field, a bachelor’s degree, and demonstrate proficiency in English.
Deferrals are possible in exceptional cases and may be granted solely for the next academic year following the original admission offer.
If you have been working in an English-speaking environment for more than two years, you do not need to present a language certificate.
