Geneva Academy Fridays

Started in January 2019

These monthly briefings for Geneva-based diplomats in charge of human rights issues aim at discussing topical issues and processes like the United Nations (UN) Treaty Body (TB) 2020 Review. They provide updates on academic findings on the functioning of the UN human rights mechanisms and bodies.

The Geneva Academy Fridays are open to all interested delegations. Due to their informal nature, no reports or records of the meetings are published.

If you are a Geneva-based diplomat and want to be updated about our upcoming Geneva Academy Fridays, you can contact us at the following email address: genevahumanrightsplatform[at]geneva-academy.ch

Issues Discussed

Issues discussed include the UN TB 2020 Review, and in particular questions which could be picked up in a resolution by the UN General Assembly. These range from the criteria for TB membership to the structuring of national reports and dialogues with TBs, or the handling of the individual communications procedure.

The briefings also highlighted issues such as the role of the TB Chairpersons or the mandate of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in relation to the secretariat support to UN TBs.
