Evening Conversation with Mariana Katzarova: Repression, Accountability, and the State of Human Rights in Russia

Event

Join us for a compelling evening at the Geneva Academy with Mariana Katzarova, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Russian Federation and a Senior Distinguished Fellow at the Geneva Academy.

In conversation with Matthew Jones (with Human Rights House Foundation) Ms. Katzarova will offer insights into the escalation of repression against dissident and human rights voices inside the country concurrently to the continuing aggression abroad in the war against Ukraine, and the growing challenges facing her mandate.

As she prepares to present her latest reports to the UN Human Rights Council and General Assembly, Ms. Katzarova will offer insights into how the state of human rights in Russia is placed in the broader context of global patterns of repression and resistance, and the role international mechanisms can play in advancing accountability and protecting civil society.

This is a rare opportunity to engage directly with one of the UN’s newest Special Rapporteurs and the first one with a country permanent member of the UN Security Council, whose decades-long career in human rights has spanned conflict zones, international investigations, and high-level advisory roles. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in an open discussion with Ms. Katzarova and explore how international actors can respond to the challenges outlined in her mandate.

This event will be followed by drinks.

About the Speaker

Appointed by the UN Human Rights Council in April 2023, Mariana Katzarova brings decades of experience in international human rights work. She previously led the UN-mandated examination of human rights in Belarus, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Donbas, in Eastern Ukraine, and Amnesty International's investigations in Russia and during the war in Chechnya. She also founded RAW in WAR (Reach All Women in War), where she launched the Anna Politkovskaya Award for women journalists and human rights defenders from war and conflict zones. Her career spans conflict zones from Bosnia to Ukraine and advisory roles at the UN and OSCE, making her a uniquely authoritative voice on global human rights.

The Mandate’s latest reports include one to the General Assembly on 'Torture in the Russian Federation: a tool for repression at home and aggression abroad' (A/79/508) and to the Human Rights Council on 'Situation of human rights in the Russian Federation' (A/HRC/57/59) in 2024.
