The Jean-Pictet Competition is a week long training event on international humanitarian law (IHL) intended for students (undergraduate or above in Law, Political Science, Military Academies, etc.). It consists in “taking law out of the books”, by simulations and role plays, allowing the jury of the Competition to evaluate teams’ theoretical knowledge and practical understanding of IHL.
The competition is taking place for more than 20 years, and is being held each year in a different place around the world. During the week, teams from different academic institutions are competing against each-others while participating in role-plays aimed at reflecting real life experiences of international humanitarian lawyers and jurists. At the end of the competition, the winning team is announces. Nonetheless, it seems that participating in the competition as such is a win-win situation and offers a unique experience for the students: the encounter with different students from different backgrounds, all interested in the same subject matter, the personal reconnaissance with professionals in IHL subject matters that arrive to the competition to assist and contribute their knowledge, the specialization in IHL regain during the week through practice and the friendly atmosphere throughout the week. The weekly event is an unforgotten experience and students participating in the competition will remain forever part of the “Jean-Pictet Family” with friends from all around the globe.
The Academy has participated in the competition since its establishment and its representing teams have reached the semi-finals and finals few years in a row. Members of the representing team are being selected from among the students of the Academy. Once chosen, the team will participate in a training program offered by the Academy as well as coached by an experienced coach, to ensure the teams’ both theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills.
