The Executive Master-Diploma of Advanced Studies in International Law in Armed Conflict (60 ECTS credits) is delivered jointly by the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies and the University of Geneva.

Our programme will enable you to:

 

  • Acquire specialized knowledge concerning the legal framework applicable to armed conflicts and other emergencies
  • Develop legal skills relevant to different complex situations
  • Enhance your appreciation of the options and strategies available with regard to protection and prosecution in times of armed violence

  • Duration: From 2 November 2012 to 29 July 2013 (extension possible)
  • Language of instruction: English
  • Schedule:  once a week on Friday afternoons
  • Number of places available: approximately twenty
  • Venue: Villa Barton and Villa Moynier, Rue de Lausanne, Geneva, Switzerland

Curriculum

Courses

The courses of the programme cover four subject matters, i.e. Public International Law,  International Humanitarian Law, International  Criminal Law, and Human Rights in  Armed Conflict. All courses are organized in several modules each of which consists of seven classes. At the end of each module, participants are required to complete a take-home exam. The final course grade is calculated as average of the grades obtained in the take-home exams of each module in the respective course. The courses are complemented by tutorials, i.e. specialized assistance.
 

1) Public International Law
 

  • Module: Sources and Subjects of Public International Law
  • Module: Sanctions in Public International Law
  • Module: The Security Council and the Maintenance of Peace and Security
  • Module: Post-conflict situations and reparations programmes

2) International Humanitarian Law
 

  • Module: Basic principles of International Humanitarian Law and the Conduct of Hostilities
  • Module: Protection of Persons and Property in Armed Conflict
  • Module: Weapons and Armed Conflict
  • Module: Enforcement of International Humanitarian Law

3) International Criminal Law
 

  • Module: Criminal Repression of International Crimes
  • Module: The Establishment of International Criminal Tribunals
  • Module: The International Criminal Court

4) Human Rights in Armed Conflict
 

  • Module: Human Rights Law in Armed Conflict
  • Module: Human Rights Case Law in Armed Conflict
  • Module: Peace Keeping and Human Rights

Research Paper

Participants are required to write a research thesis under the supervision of a member of the Academy's Faculty. A module on research skills is organized to aid participants in the researching for and writing of the thesis. Upon submission of the thesis, participants are required to pass a thesis defense.

Complementary Activities

The programme is complemented by conferences, workshops, seminars, and other key events organized throughout the year by the Academy.
