Course Description

The course will cover public international law problems such as Weapons law in the context of IHL, disarmament, arms control and arms trade regulation, the meaning of Weapons and methods of warfare, and the evolution and the sources of weapons law. Issues such as superficial injury and unnecessary suffering, the principle of distinction and weapons law, nuclear, biological and chemical weapons will be discussed. The course will also embrace treaties relating to weapons: namely the Conventional weapons Convention and its Protocols and the Ottawa and Oslo Conventions. The course will end with future issues on regulating or reacting to technical developments and the conduct of article 36 weapons reviews.
