Tutorials – Tom Haeck
Course Description
The course provides an in-depth knowledge of human rights law in armed conflicts and counter-terrorism situations. After a short introduction to basic principles of human rights, the course concentrates on rights most affected by such situations, namely, the rights to life, liberty, and fair trial and the prohibition of torture and other inhuman or degrading treatment. The course examines the regimes applicable to states of emergency as well as restrictions to liberties such as freedom of expression and private life for the purpose of national security. Case-law is taken from the United Nations treaty-bodies as well as those from the European, Inter-American and African regional human rights systems.
